Natures Darkroom
A Business By Jacob Waxman
My History of Outdoor Activities

I was introduced to the beautiful and natural part of the world in 1999 when I climbed Mount Height at the age of 7. After climbing Mount Height I began to appreciate the natural side of the world. I became fascinated with the power of nature; I eventually became so overwhelmed with the fact that I could only hike in the summer, I started to think about the winter. By 2000 I had never skied before, I owned no ski gear or anything at the time, but that was soon to change. In 2001, I started to ski at Bretton Woods; skiing became an addiction instead of a sport; today, in 2007, I have skied harder slopes than most people have skied in their whole lives. I ski every winter about forty days a year for almost six years now and I can’t get enough of it. After combining the two extreme seasons, I still could not get enough, I knew I needed more, more of mother earth. So in 2005, I hiked all around the Rocky Mountains, I also hiked in the southern Utah desert. That south Utah desert trip could have been the end of my life because I ran out of water and hiked on the wrong path. Even though that may be something that would cause someone to stop loving nature, it doesn't’t to me. What makes others nervous enough to quit, fuels my love for it. Later that summer I hiked around the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone Natl. Park. I have gone back to where I was lost in the desert and had no water, and I realized how close to death I was, I decided from there on that I would record every piece of nature’s power. From there on, I respected the natural power of the world.

I started to take pictures with my grandfather’s old Pentax. The Pentax Camera was so old that you needed to roll the film every picture or you overlapped pictures, and you needed to focus and zoom manually. In some ways it was the best camera I had ever had; it taught me what everything is on the camera. I then bought a series of digital cameras, but eventually went back to film. That is until I got my current camera, a Panasonic Lumix, which is the equivalent of a 35mm.
